Summary: When Eisenhower replaced Truman as president in 1962, he began a doctrine of containment around the world, intending to prevent the spread of communism. Eisenhower also promised to end the Korean War. In order to limit the effects of nationalism, establish a free trade bloc, and establish a common front against communism, the EEC was created.
