Chinese Civil War 1946-1949
- Mao and the CCP liberated much of northern China from Japanese by 1945
- Chiang was supported by the U.S.
- The U.S. wanted to form a coalition between the two groups (George Marshall)
- Mao led a peasant army People's Liberation Army (PLA)
Quote: "You say, away with you Communists; we say, away with you imperialists."
- Mao Zedong |
Subjunctive question: What would China be like today if the Japanese and Kuomintang were successful in fending off the PLA?
|
Summary: The CCP and the Kuomintang were still at war. Mao had finally driven the Japanese out and started focusing on the nationalists. Mao had a peasant army of over 2 million people which overwhelmed the nationalists and drove them back to the island of, what is now known as, Taiwan.
